Southern Comforters Quilt Guild of Bowie, Maryland

Meetings: When & Where & What

Southern Comforters meetings begin business at 7:30 pm on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month. Meetings are held at the Christian Community Presbyterian Church at 3120 Belair Drive in Bowie, Maryland. (see a map) Doors open at 7:00 for those who wish to socialize prior to the meeting.

Meetings include announcements from various committees and officers, show and tell, and often special programs. Occasionally, potluck celebrations are held. Doorprizes are awarded most meetings for birthdays, nametags, and block-of-the-month winners. Selections from the guild library are available for borrowing, and often members clean out their stash of fabric, magazines, and other supplies for other guild members to enjoy. Mostly, though, members sit around large round tables, work on various sewing (or knitting) projects, and catch up with each other.

Emergency Weather Meeting Cancellation Policy:
Southern Comforters meetings will be cancelled if any of the following occurs:
1. If it is snowing at the time of the meeting.

3. If Prince George's or Anne Arundel counties cancel evening activities on a meeting night.

Annual Retreats

Once a year in February, many of our members join together for a long weekend at a retreat located at the Eastern Shore of Maryland. This retreat is characterized by fellowship, mystery and block exchanges, fun, food, sewing time and other activities. Members who attend have returned the following year.

We also have an additional retreat the weekend before Thanksgiving on the Eastern Shore. This weekend is an "open sew", no frills weekend.

In May, the guild celebrates its anniversary with a potluck dinner and the drawing for an anniversary quilt. Each year, the previous year's winner selects a pattern and gathers donated blocks from guild members to create a top awarded to one lucky guild member. Any member in good standing is eligible for the drawing, unless she has won the top in the past ten years.

Sewing Bees

In addition to our meetings held twice a month, some of our members gather on a regular basis. Some meet weekly, some monthly, some during the day, some on the alternating Wednesday evening from our meetings. Members work together on group projects, community projects, and still others simply enjoy the companionship of fellow sewers as they complete their own projects. Katz's Bee is open to all. We meet at the Crofton Library. Come when you can, leave when you must. Bring whatever you want to work on and the tools you need. The room at the library has natural light and plenty of space, so it is a great place to add borders to a quilt, swap tips and techniques and more. Come and spend a day sewing.
