FIRST PLACE

Congratulations to Albert Feldman of Rockville, MD on “Coming Into Focus” winning first place.

Your prize is sponsored by: Bucklebee Bags, Hobbs Quilt Batting, Aurifil, and Southern Comforters Quilt Guild of Bowie.

His artist statement reads: Coming into Focus – Vision is based on the detection of light in the eye and a sharp focus is important for clear vision. Focusing represents the convergence of light. My quilt represents the focusing of light waves as depicted by rings of waves that decrease in diameter as they move toward the center of the quilt.

Quilt Judge, Kimberly Breton Iaquinta is a certified AQS quilt appraiser from Arnold, MD. She had this to say about your quilt: The composition “Coming into Focus” (1st. Place) is the most successful piece in this collection. This whole-cloth piece is so well executed that it is a testament to the basic pleasure of simple things. Although this kind of accurate quilting is anything but simple the artist found that harmony and carefully lifts our mood with a moment of happy concentration. And this artist did that for me with this arrangement and I am better for it.

SECOND PLACE

Congratulations to Patricia Rader of Bowie, MD on “The Mermaid’s Looking Glass” winning second place

Your prize is sponsored by: Quilters Dream Batting, Hab+Dash by Fil-Tec , and Southern Comforters Quilt Guild of Bowie.

Her artist statement reads : The Mermaid’s Looking Glass – Stories of sailors sighting mermaids date back thousands of years. It is thought that these stories are explained as imaginary visions at the sighting of manatees or dugongs. These stories appear all over the world in all most all cultures. You glimpse my mermaid through her reflection as she gazes into her looking glass. She is in a world that exists in my mind’s eye. The last reported sighting of a mermaid was February 2012 in Zimbabwe. It was reported by more than one person. Next time you are at the beach, keep your eyes peeled.

Quilt Judge, Kimberly Breton Iaquinta is a certified AQS quilt appraiser from Arnold, MD. She had this to say about your quilt: “The composition “Mermaid” (2nd. Place) is creative and pleasing, with a sophisticated color scheme. It pulls you in and lets your eye rest. There is a peace that comes across as the viewer’s eye feels the movement within. The quilting is very effective adding a watery light to the scene. A closer look shows excellent workmanship. This is a dreamy but thoughtful piece.

THIRD PLACE

Congratulations to Sue Williamson of Ellicott City, MD on “Eye See Crazy” winning third place

Your prize is sponsored by: Quilters Dream Batting, Hab+Dash by Fil-Tec , and Southern Comforters Quilt Guild of Bowie.

Her artist statement reads: Eye See Crazy – No one should take their vision for granted and I am no exception. Changes in my eyesight recently have caused me to sometimes see things a little off kilter. Inspired by the Henry David Thoreau quote, “It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see”. I created this quilt to reflect what I see. And I see crazy.

Quilt Judge, Kimberly Breton Iaquinta is a certified AQS quilt appraiser from Arnold, MD. She had this to say about your quilt: The composition “Eye See Crazy” (3rd. Place) with its neon green juxtaposed to black and white the appetizer of my feast. This quilt is optically arresting (done with clever piecing in the center). This piece is strong and very well executed -so that the sum is greater than its parts. The appliqued eye has a bracing effect on the quilt and helps to ground the viewer and defines the challenge.

Thank you to all the participants, our many sponsors, our judge Kimberly Breton Iaquinta, and our viewers. Please watch for the announcement of the 2021 challenge coming soon.
