It is a long-standing tradition to recognize a member of Southern Comforters to be the Featured Quilter for their Annual Quilt show. This year our Quilt Show Chair AnneMarie selected Misty Cole.
Misty is not only a talented artist, but a dedicated contributor to the guild.Artistís Statement
Misty learned the basics of sewing as a child, being surrounded by a family full of women who demonstrated every handwork skill imaginable. She loves to crochet, knit, and sew.
Her interest in quilting started when she saw an amazing show of art quilts at Louisiana State University as a student. The show demonstrated to her that quilting is truly an art form. She began quilting nine years ago, when her first son was born. She taught myself from library books and the internet for the first year, Misty says her skill set improved tremendously when she joined Southern Comforters.
Her educational background is in painting and drawing. Her favorite definition of creativity is combining familiar things in a new, interesting way. She tries to do this in her quilts, mixing contemporary images or concepts with traditional quilting and handwork techniques, like needle-turn applique, hand quilting, embroidery, and smocking. She enjoys exploring innovative techniques, like fabric painting, hand dyeing, and printmaking, on the traditional form of a quilt. Misty says she tries to express her sense of humor in her work, or comment on contemporary society or pop culture, or share the experience of her humanity. Her goal is to get the viewer to do a double take, and stop and think about what she is trying to communicate in her work.
Besides Southern Comforters of Bowie quilt guild, she is also a member of the Baltimore Applique Society, Metrothreads (a fiber part group with membership from the greater Washington DC area), and Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA).
